Chapter Twenty-Eight

Unwanted memories.

As four o’clock approached, my nerves began. I was obsessing and starting to sweat. My nerves were shot. I had to sit once again with Michael Ricci. I mean, what the fuck was I thinking? Like it wasn’t bad enough the first time at the restaurant? Could someone tell me why I agreed to such a ridiculous idea? After everything that had happened, I wasn’t sure I could sit through it. I had to end anything before it started and make sure he got the message.

I didn’t want Michael to be attracted to me at all, so I made sure I didn’t change out of my trousers and shirt, which were dusty and dirty from working in the storeroom all morning. My hair was in a high ponytail and frizzed, and I had zero makeup on. He looked perfect all the time, I was pretty sure his girlfriends were real dolls too, so it would be pretty easy to put him off and embarrass him in front of his sister and whoever else was going to be there. I wasn’t one of the women who lived in their world, the perfect, plastic wives and girlfriends. I wasn’t what he was used to anymore. I had also grown, and I wasn’t the same person I was when I was eighteen, either. I straightened out my bright yellow polo shirt and dusted down my black trousers. I looked like a gigantic bumble bee that needed a good wash, but that’s kinda the impression I wanted to give.

At four, I didn’t even get the chance to leave the supermarket before Michael was waiting at the automatic doors for me.

“He’s waiting for you, huh? He’s freaking gorgeous!” Bethany stared at Michael as she crunched on a bag of cheese chips and drank from a yogurt cup in her other hand. Her belly was certainly getting larger and her appetite matched.

“Believe me, he might be hot, but he is a gigantic asshole. See you tomorrow.” I smirked at her as I grabbed my coat and carried it with me.

“You better fill me in!” She laughed and pointed at me with cheesy fingers.

Michael kept his gaze firmly on me as I walked toward him. He didn’t even blink, it was intense, and I began to sweat under his gaze. It was like I was walking the green mile; that’s how it felt. When I reached him, he handed me a white wrap and inside were a bunch of bright yellow daffodils. He remembered. I took them and bit my lip. I wanted so bad to smile at him and say thank you with a hug. I was secretly happy and grateful, but I couldn’t let him see that. I needed him to get the point I wanted nothing to do with him.

“Thanks.” My smile was tiny, but he seemed to accept it or ignore it. I kept hold of my flowers on my lap in the passenger seat of Michael’s car. I kept peeking at them all the way to the outside of town.
